Ask House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce to issue a statement in support of Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is a museum and World Heritage Site open to all and appreciated for its stunning architecture and history, including its history as a Byzantine era basilica. However, there is a growing movement in Turkey to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque. On Wednesday night a Koran reading and Muslim prayers were held in Hagia Sophia and attended by Turkish government officials, while Turkey's state television channel broadcast the religious service on national television.
The Greek Foreign Ministry condemned the holding of Muslim prayers at Hagia Sophia:
Hagia Sophia is a UNESCO world heritage site. The attempt to convert it into a mosque – through reading of the Koran, holding of prayers, and a number of other actions – is an affront to the international community, which needs to be duly mobilized and to react...
We call on Turkey to conduct itself as a modern and democratic country, to protect the ecumenical nature of Hagia Sophia, and to respect the age-old tradition of this global monument.
Sign this petition asking House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce to issue a statement against the creeping conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque. The more attention we bring to this "creeping conversion" of Hagia Sophia, the more likely it will be that we will succeed in protecting and preserving this historic site.
